A Glimpse Into Week 4

This week was a big one for science!  On Monday we got to observe our Red Wigglers up close.  Students were focusing on observing the body of the worm and also how the worm moved.

On Tuesday, Erik Street came to talk to the first grade about recycling in Yarmouth.

On Thursday, we took a trip to the YES garden.  We toured the garden, harvested carrots, and collected seeds from sunflowers!

Back in the classroom, students practiced reading to themselves, reading to partners, retelling the stories they read, and identifying main characters and setting.

We also dove into unit 2 of Everyday Math.  Students played games that focused on using a number grid to count up and back.  They also used pennies to practice their addition facts with sums of 10.

Stay tuned for more next week!

Week 3, Folks!

We have so much to share with you this week!

We made and illustrated our class rules.

We kicked off writers' workshop by writing small moments stories.  This will be our focus through September and most of October.  Ask your kiddo what small moment he/she wrote about today!

We've started reading from our independent reading level bins.  Homework books will start coming home in green folders in a few weeks!

We met as an entire first grade and made the grade 1 traveling worm bin to help us recycle our leftover veggies (fruit=lots of fruit flies in the classroom) instead of throwing them in the trash.  We will have the worms on our classroom on Mondays.

Enjoy the last few official days of summer this weekend!

Week 2!

I can't believe the first day of school was just last week.  We've come so far in 9 days!  Everyone is making friends and starting to settle into the routines of school.  We're off to a fantastic start here at the end of the hall.

We finished up a 6 day project of making self portraits to line the hallways.  If you weren't able to make it to open house, I highly suggest you find time to stroll the hallways and see everyones' amazing creations!

In math we've been practicing counting by 5's, using tally marks to represent numbers, and working cooperatively during math games.

In science we discussed what scientists do, used our senses to observe objects, and started learning about recycling.

The Smart Owls have been building their independent reading stamina this week.  They've been practicing making good book choices, finding the right spot in the room to read, and staying focused during reading time.

Next week we launch our formal writing and reading workshops!

Happy weekend to all!
